BIOGRAPHY
Chuck Zabilski was educated in engineering and law and is a broadcast television executive who has over thirty-five years of broadcast engineering and operations experience. For the first twenty years (1973-1993), he worked in Hollywood and the Media District of Burbank, California, for such media companies as NBC (now NBC Universal) and Warner Bros. Studios. In 1993 Chuck relocated near Denver to the mountain community of Evergreen, Colorado, and continued his career with local cable programmers both within the United States and internationally. As rewarding as this career was, he always found his challenge to be in capturing his vision of nature on film and digital media. While working in Los Angeles, he would make a yearly Autumn color trip to southwest Colorado to capture the fall color show in late September and early October. Once settled in Evergreen, he was less than a day's drive away from the spectacular scenery of Telluride, Ouray, and the nearby mountain ranges and passes. He resides in Evergreen with his wife Marilyn.
PHOTOGRAPHY
I became interested in photography through a friend and co-worker during my early days in Hollywood. At that time I was starting out with my first 35 mm (Minolta) camera and taking a lot of shots, all of them forgettable. My co-worker, Hank Lewald, had been shooting with medium format (6x6) for many years, and he offered me plenty of personal instruction about landscape photography, medium and large format cameras and film, and the art of visualization and composition. He also told me about the less visited but very scenic areas of Colorado near Telluride and Ouray. Shortly thereafter I was hooked on medium and large format, and utilizing all of my vacations to travel the southwest and capture the scenery and light. My activities then were confined to capturing the image. I left the developing and printing of these images to a few of the many professional photo labs that permeated the Hollywood area. Only in 2004 did I take the plunge into the digital workflow with Photoshop and Lightroom, and digital inkjet printing (see Technology). When I am not out in the field, I am learning more about this art and craft from the masters like David Muench (www.muenchphotography.com), Charles Cramer (www.charlescramer.com), and Marc Adamus (www.marcadamus.com).
